According to Gandhi, the reason for the decline in basic education

Colonial Education: During British colonial rule, education in India was primarily aimed at producing a class of individuals who could serve as clerks and administrators for the British Empire. Gandhi criticized this system, as it neglected the development of practical skills, self-sufficiency, and moral values. He saw it as perpetuating a culture of subservience rather than empowering individuals.
Inequality and Discrimination: Gandhi observed that education was not equally accessible to all sections of society. He highlighted the inequality and discrimination prevalent in the education system, particularly with regard to caste and gender. He advocated for an inclusive education system that would provide equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their background.
Lack of Moral and Ethical Values: Gandhi believed that education should not only focus on intellectual development but also on character building and the cultivation of moral and ethical values. He felt that the education system had neglected this aspect, resulting in a decline in moral values and integrity in society.
In response to these concerns, Gandhi proposed a vision of education that aimed to address these shortcomings and create a more holistic, practical, and morally grounded system of learning. His ideas emphasized the importance of reconnecting education with the community, promoting practical skills, and nurturing ethical values.
